Thanks for this recollection of the ground breaking work we were doing in the 90s with VR visualization tools. The Ames Stereo Pipeline is now widely used in planetary science for many applications and has been open source since the early 2000s. Keep eyes out for its use with very high contrast images from the lunar surface near the South Pole when VIPER lands on the moon in 2024.
